About the ICO – Northern Ireland
Our Northern Ireland regional office is based in Belfast. It is responsible for:
- raising awareness of the role and functions of the ICO within Northern Ireland;
- investigating and resolving freedom of information complaints;
- ensuring the interests of individuals, organisations and public authorities throughout Northern Ireland are considered in the development of ICO policy and guidance;
- encouraging good practice amongst businesses and public authorities;
- liaising with the Northern Ireland Assembly and other decision makers to ensure policy, legislation and structures comply with the principles of the legislation we regulate; and
- providing general advice to individuals, organisations and public authorities based in Northern Ireland.

Aubrey McCrory, Assistant Commissioner for Northern Ireland, leads the Northern Ireland team.
Aubrey joined the ICO’s Belfast office in 2008 after working in improvement and regulatory roles covering central and local government, and private sector consultancy. Previously, he was a deputy director in the Equality Commission’s Policy and Development Division, with specific responsibility for the statutory equality duties. Aubrey has an honours degree in politics and public administration, a Master of Philosophy in conflict studies and a Master of Science in research methods.
