On Wednesday 4 March 2009 the Information Commissioner’s Office will be holding its Data Protection Officer Conference at the Manchester Central Convention Centre, Petersfield.
A series of high profile data losses in both the public and private sector over the last 12 months has increased awareness of the importance of data security.
David Smith,
Deputy Commissioner at the ICO, said: "The role of the Data Protection Officer is crucial in influencing organisations and ensuring that good data protection practice remains a high priority. The conference will provide a platform for discussion on how organisations can do data protection better. It will allow Data Protection Officers to share their experiences of working to embed the principles of good data protection practice in their organisation’s culture."
Building on the success of the 2008 conference the next event will be an opportunity to reflect on the increased profile of data protection, following recent data losses; to share ideas and experiences on how to deal with the challenges Data Protection Officers face, and to hear from expert speakers.
Speakers
Richard Thomas, the Information Commissioner,
will open the event, followed by Andrew Mann, Marketing Director for Planning and Innovation at Tesco. The afternoon session will be opened by Michael Wills MP, Minister of State responsible for data protection, followed by Government Chief Information Officer, John Suffolk. We will also be holding a series of interactive workshops on the day ranging from how to conduct Privacy Impact Assessments to how Data Protection Officers can maximise their role within their organisation.

Andrew Mann, Marketing Director for Planning and Innovation at Tesco states: “The personal information Tesco handles about employees, customers and business contacts is a core business asset and there are positive benefits in embracing good data protection management. Therefore, we look forward to sharing our experiences with data protection officers at this important event”.
Registration Process
Data Protection Officers are invited to register their interest in attending the conference. Delegates will receive a confirmation email seven days after the closing date of 30 January 2009 if they have been allocated a place at the event. If you are unsuccessful in gaining a place, you will be on the waiting list in case another delegate drops out.
This event is targeted at Data Protection Officers; places will primarily be allocated on a first come first served basis to individuals operating as Data Protection Officers for their organisations. However, to ensure that we have a broad range of delegates attending, we will also consider the size of the organisation they are representing. No more than two delegates will be able to attend per organisation.
